Use a cartridge-return scheme that accepts your exact ink or toner cartridge. Do not assume a plastic cartridge belongs in household mixed recycling or that every retailer accepts every brand.
Start with the cartridge maker
Read the brand and model number before selecting a scheme. Inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges and waste-toner containers can have different return routes.

HP and Canon describe free return options for eligible supplies. That does not establish eligibility for compatible, refilled or other-brand cartridges. Check the programme before packing a mixed box.
Charity and retailer collections
Some schemes raise money through eligible cartridges. Read their accepted-model list, minimum quantity, packaging and postage terms. A cartridge being accepted does not necessarily mean it generates a donation.
For an in-store drop-off, confirm the specific branch still participates. Do not make a special journey based on an old store list, and do not leave cartridges outside a closed collection point.
Prepare a return
Keep the cartridge intact and follow the scheme’s packaging instructions. Reuse suitable protective packaging where allowed, prevent leakage and attach the correct current label. Do not empty toner powder into a bin or wash ink down a sink.
If a cartridge is damaged or leaking, ask the receiving scheme before posting it. A standard prepaid envelope is not a guarantee that any condition or quantity is permitted.
What about the printer itself?
The printer is electrical waste and needs its own route. A cartridge scheme may accept only consumables. Remove user-removable cartridges as directed by the equipment and collection instructions, and check the printer’s separate recycling arrangements.
Can compatible cartridges be recycled?
Potentially, but a manufacturer’s own-brand programme may exclude them. Use the supplier or a specialist scheme’s eligibility checker.
Can I get paid for them?
Some services offer payments for specified models and conditions. Check whether your cartridge qualifies for a payment or charity donation before sending it.
