How to Set a Bin Day Reminder on Your Phone

Find your next confirmed collection date, then set a reminder early enough to put the correct bin out. A reminder works best when its date, waste type and notification settings are all right.

First, confirm the collection

Use your council calendar and check your full address. If recycling and general waste alternate, note which one is due next. Garden and food services may follow different patterns.

The council’s presentation deadline matters. Choose a reminder that leaves time to act before it; do not assume every council uses the same morning deadline.

Option 1: your phone’s reminders or calendar

Create an event or reminder with a clear name such as “Put out recycling”. Set its alert for a suitable time and choose the recurrence that matches the confirmed schedule. Interface labels differ by phone and version; use a custom repeat if a two-week interval is needed.

For alternating bins, create separate reminders with different starting dates. Review several future occurrences before saving. A monthly recurrence is not the same as every four weeks.

If the council publishes a one-off change, adjust that occurrence and check that the following dates remain correct. Avoid moving the entire series by accident.

Example: Google Calendar on Android

Google’s current repeating-event instructions use this route:

1. Open Google Calendar and choose Create → Event.
2. Name the event for the bin, then choose the first confirmed date and a useful time.
3. Open Does not repeat beneath the time and select the matching repeat pattern.
4. Save, then open the event and choose Edit → Add notification to set the alert. Finish with Done → Save.

Check the saved event and its notification time before relying on it. Google’s notification guide explains the alert controls. Labels can change with app updates.

For a one-off holiday change, edit the affected date and choose This event when asked which occurrences to update.

Option 2: a bin-collection app

Check the phone as well as the app

• Confirm notifications are allowed in system settings.
• Check any focus, quiet-hours or battery restrictions relevant to the app.
• Make sure the reminder is enabled for the intended collection.
• Recheck the address and dates after changing settings or reinstalling.

An alert cannot correct incorrect source dates. If the schedule looks wrong, compare the council’s current calendar and contact support with the relevant details through its private channel.

Do reminders move for bank holidays?

An ordinary repeating alarm does not know the council’s decision. Check bank-holiday arrangements and the actual dates displayed in your chosen app.

Can I use an online council calendar instead?

Yes, if the council provides one. Establish whether you are subscribing to updates or importing a one-off file. Keep notification settings enabled in the calendar app you use.
